EMR Once Bitten Twice
Shy, The Key Prerequisite In Implementing Electronic Medical Records
Successfully...Flexibility!
At-a-Glance
Dr. Lora Efaw MD opened the Center for Healing and Wellness with a
vision to provide a broad spectrum of medical services to her patients,
Dr. Efaw began offering alternative treatments such as Chelation therapy,
Mesotherapy, weight loss and wellness programs with a focus on comprehensive
and preventative care. Dr. Efaw quickly established herself as a unique
and progressive healthcare provider in the community.
Being forward minded, Dr. Efaw believed that Electronic
Medical Records would be a great way to streamline the efficiency
of her practice. After four months of trying to adapt her unique
style of practicing medicine to fit within the framework of the
new EMR, she abandoned the system entirely, calling it a "complete
disaster."
Dr.Efaw, realizing that she was only delaying the
inevitable, was not about to give up. Upon her second attempt at EMR,
she decided to establish a set of specific criteria regarding the
implementation of any EMR solution. Her criteria were:
- An EMR document management system that is easily and
completely customizable to our practice.
- The ability to custom design templates and workflow procedures
to our own patient data and demographics for populating
forms and reports.
- Implement the new EMR document management solution within
30 days.
- The ability to incorporate every facet of our practice
into a comprehensive health record for each patient.

This Internal
Medicine Practice Got A Dose of Professional Business Management &
Is Now Healthier Than Ever
At-a-Glance
Health Care Associates is a three-physician Internal Medicine practice
in Newark, DE. The practice specializes in cardiovascular disease
and with over ten years of being in business has built a reputation,
as one of the most professional and friendly practices in the area.
Although the physician partners were making a comfortable
income, practice revenues dropped by 10 percent over the last year
and the physicians believe, it may be due to a combination of an
antiquated, not so user-friendly practice management system and
new claims biller they hired a year ago.
The critical questions they were seeking answers
to were as follows:
- How the practice might reverse a 10 percent revenue decline
over the previous year.
- Would the computer and practice management systems need
upgrading or replacement?
- How knowledgeable is the new claims biller in handling
the practice's workflow and processing duties

How One Pediatrician Turned $1 of Equity Into
$500,000 In Less Than 2 Years!
At-a-Glance
Dr. HOWARD Borin was a Pediatrician working for Children's Hospital
of Philadelphia (CHOP), in Wilmington Delaware. Like many doctors,
he had sold his original practice ten years earlier to CHOP to get
out from under the administrative and business aspect of running a
successful pediatric practice.
Recently, CHOP asked Dr. Borin to resign his position,
the practice was not making money and in light of the fact that
he was turning 65; according to his contract, they could mandate
his retirement. CHOP also offered him an alternative to purchase
the practice back from them at a fare market value of $1.
The critical issues facing Dr. Borin at this
stage of his career were significant:
- He was about to loose a $250k salary and become self-employed
once again with a practice that was in the red.
- He was being offered the option to buy back his practice
that he had built over 30 years for $1 and needed more equity
out of the practice to retire comfortably.
- He was unsure of the good will and real equity value
of the practice.
- Having relied on CHOP to manage the administrative and
business affairs of his practice, once again he would now
have to assume all these responsibilities himself
